Our tarmac driveway installation process

Our tarmac driveway installation process is designed to be straightforward and stress-free from start to finish. It begins with a free site survey, where we assess ground conditions, access, drainage requirements, and layout while taking the time to understand exactly what you want. Based on this, we’ll offer honest advice and recommend the most suitable solution for your property.

After the survey, you’ll receive a clear, fixed quote that covers everything discussed – no hidden extras or vague estimates. Once work begins, we focus heavily on proper ground preparation, excavating where needed, installing a solid sub-base, addressing drainage, and fitting edging where required, as this stage is essential for long-term durability. The tarmac is then laid hot, carefully levelled, and thoroughly compacted to create a smooth, hard-wearing finish. Finally, we carry out final checks with you and provide simple aftercare advice so your new driveway stays in great condition for years to come.

FAQ's

Can weeds grow through tarmac?

Properly installed tarmac is highly resistant to weed growth. When a strong sub-base and membrane are used, weeds won’t grow through the surface. That said, airborne seeds can sometimes settle in dirt along edges or cracks over many years, but this is minimal and easily managed with basic maintenance.

In most cases, you can walk on tarmac within a few hours. For vehicles, it’s best to wait 24 to 48 hours before driving on it, depending on weather conditions. During very hot weather, allowing a little extra time helps prevent surface marks while the tarmac fully hardens.

Tarmac should not be laid during very cold, wet, or icy conditions. Winter months can be problematic if temperatures drop too low, as tarmac needs warmth to be laid and compacted correctly. For best results, spring through early autumn offers the most reliable conditions.

In most cases, no planning permission is required for a tarmac driveway. However, UK regulations state that driveways over five square metres must allow water to drain naturally into the ground or a suitable drainage system. If proper drainage isn’t included, planning permission may be needed.

No – tarmac should never be laid directly on soil. A solid, well-compacted sub-base (usually MOT Type 1) is essential to prevent sinking, cracking, and water issues. Skipping this step will significantly shorten the lifespan of the driveway.
